The 3 Most Popular Gems of 2018

Updated: Nov 1, 2018

The Pantone Institute of color declared Ultra Violet to be the 2018 color of the year. In a statement about this new color trend Pantone said, “Ultraviolet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us towards the future.” Throughout this year designers have used this color in fashion, art, and in interior design. This color is also found naturally in several gem stones that have been very popular in jewelry this year. The top 3 gems in the color would be: Amethyst, Tanzanite, and Grape Garnet. All three of these stones easily take on the personality of the color but they also have their own meanings that are very applicable to those wearing them.

Amethyst is most easily recognized as the February birthstone. However it is one of the most famous semi-precious gems, maintaining popularity since ancient times. Since it has been well known for so long it has had several different meanings but it is most commonly recognized as a calming stone. This means that it is believed to work across emotional, physical, and spiritual planes which in turn creates feelings of peace, and serenity. With that feeling of peace also comes the ability to have a clear mind and focused thoughts.

Like Amethyst, Tanzanite is also known as a calming stone. People originally associated it with this calming feeling because of its deep blue and purple coloring. This coloring is created when it is exposed to extreme heat which is why some Tanzanite may appear brown. Accompanying its calming ability, it is also believed to make the wearer more compassionate, enlightened, and aware.

Grape Garnet ranges from a deep red to a dark purple. It originally got its name because of how similar it looks compared to pomegranate seeds. This gem is believed to increase strength and balance as well as created a deeper connection with mother earth. It is also believed to have protective abilities.

2018 is coming to a close and Pantone will choose a new color of the year which will change which gems are the most popular. While we look forward to that, we can fill our own jewelry stash with these three unique and powerful gems.
